A Brave and Generous Irish American Woman Leaves a Lasting Legacy

A Brave and Generous Irish American Woman Leaves a Lasting Legacy

Teresa "Elsie" McConville (1926-2020)

Elsie McConville's long life was marked by determination, self-reliance and care for others. Born, raised, and educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, she moved to Bedford NH in 1976 to live with her brother after their mother's passing. She soon realized she wanted her own home, and lived for many years on Saint Anselm Drive, getting to know the college and the monks of Saint Anselm Abbey. She worked at banks and department stores but is particularly and fondly remembered for her joy in caring for children. Many Bedford families treasure the years she devoted to their children's growth and happiness. Even in her final years at the Bishop Primeau Apartments, she was a lively and thoughtful friend to many.

At her passing, Elsie left a significant, generous bequest to Saint Anselm College in her estate. Further, in her honor and memory, friends created the Elsie McConville Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will assist generations of students, particularly first generation students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to achieve a Saint Anselm College education - truly a lasting legacy of a simple yet remarkable woman.
